Nice pix, Mike. I can never see enough of my beloved city. And so
nice of you to visit my nabe. Too bad I didn't know you were nearby.
We could have had lunch at Wu Liang Ye, best Chinese restaurant
outside of Chinatown. Maybe next time. I really do love this
neighborhood, which was almost entirely German when I moved up here.
Only a few German shops left. One restaurant, Old Heidelberg, and a
grocery shop, Schaller & Weber.
Many years ago, when I was pregnant with my first son, my Ob/Gyn,
herself an Austrian, told me to go to the Bremen House to get certain
kind of tea that would aid production of milk. I was breast-feeding
that baby. She also told me to drink beer to do the same thing. At
the time, we lived in Greenwich Village, just around the corner from
Our Lady of Pompeii Church on Bleecker Street, and a grocery store
that carried Tuborg beer, the only kind of beer I ever liked.
I love your pix of Madison Square Park. I have been there but never
spent much time. A nice thing about NYC, that most people don't
recognize, is that almost every neighborhood has its own park. Even
though I am only 6 blocks away from Central Park, my local park is
Carl Schurz Park, where Gracie Mansion, the Mayor's official residence
is located. Mayor Bloomberg doesn't live there; he has his own
townhouse somewhere in the East 70's, but he uses Gracie Mansion for
state occasions. Once, a few years ago, Wolfgang was in NYC and I
took him for a walk in Carl Schurz Park. Since he is a builder and
renovater of houses, I took him to see Gracie Mansion, which is very
old, dating back to the 1700's. This was at the time when Rudy
Giuliani had recently left and his ex-wife, Donna Hanover, wasn't
there either. The magnificent old building had been left to decay.
The paint was chipping off the outside, the windows were dirty, and
there were concrete bunkers and menacing guards all around the area.
We didn't even bother to try to get in to see the interior.
Mike Bloomberg has repaired all the damage, with his own money, and
although he does not live there, he uses Gracie Mansion for state
occasions.
Well, dear, you know what a New York Nut I am. Neither of my kids
live in NYC although they were both born here. One prefers the
suburbs and the other is in the Second City, Chicago. I forgive them;
it's because of their work. But Chicago son comes back to NYC in
order to get his hair cut. It seems that there are no haircutters in
Chicago who can cut his hair just like Alma does. Alma is a very
trendy haircutter in Soho. Me? I now go to Supercuts, right around
the corner. Great price. And the local shop has a very good
haircutter. That's all I ever need.
Now can you see what your wonderful pix have done? Turned on the
gabbing machine. Just give me a few images and I'm off and babbling.
It's all your fault.
Love, Joyce
