Just a note to thank everyone for the kind congrats on my Ten Year
Anniversary. Over the weekend I read the posts via google groups.
However,
looking late the last few nights they still don't show up in my
newsreader.
Sigh!

Oh well! A *lot* changes in Ten Years.

A question and a few responses:

Titanic Old Fogey? The Titanic sank like a rock! Couldn't it be like...
a
Gibraltar Old Fogey, or something a little more substantially permanent?
A
GOF?.

So, looking at the post on google groups, and responding here...

Mark: Just an Eight? You are evidently on the right path, and if you
are
reading and helping here, thank you. 'Old timers' were a great help to
me
when I quit, especially Bud Ellis.

Tihomir: Thank you, I had never thought of it as a tenth of a century.
No
wonder it seems like a lifetime ago! :-) 5M's is a great time under
your
own belt, and it gets easier and easier as time passes.

Steve S: Thanks OOF buddy! You're an inspiration too.

Kestrel: Joyce, you are going to *have* to explain that one to me
sometime... Kestrel? :-D I remember those days when we quit, too. They
were fun, crazy, and carefree in the sense the only thing we cared about
was
quitting smoking. And you know I had completely forgotten about the car
ashtrays. Those things certainly were disgusting. Did you ever lose
your
lighter in the car, and have to rummage around behind and under the
seats,
or between the passenger seat and the far door? Perhpas not if you were
usually on the subway or a taxi... but let me tell you, it was not
pretty.
And great referenece to the wall colors and the cafe au lait. I was
dying
laughing at that one.

And yes I do recall the photo I had sent along. We were standing along
the
Mississippi River across from Jackson Square while the USS Iwo Jima
docked
amidst a flurry of armed helicopters, after walking through
deserted/destroyed streets with dead bodies lying in them, SWAT teams
taking
people in, other people wanting help to evacuate, others not wanting to
evacuate. It was unbelievable to have a photo taken at that time, while
we
were all grimacing and exhausted. The times certainly are bold, but they
are so much better without cigarettes. (I'll admit.... nice segue!
Crude,
but workable.) It was the only photo I had when you e-mailed, tbh. .

At any rate, I will catch up more with everyone, as posts show up on my
server. As well I am looking forward to my Quit Buddy's TOF (GOF)
Anniversary in just a short, week. Just in time for Thanksgiving!

Muchas Gracias all,

Ken

Ken:

About that "kestrel" screen name. When I signed on to Google for
newsgroups it demanded a screen name or else it would not let me into
the group. Very early on in my life with computers, my screen name
was "bluebird" but I did not want to use that again. Something a
little less twittery, a little more heroic. After all I am still
quite serious about this quitting thing. I first thought of
"vulture", but that would give the impression that I liked to eat
carrion. Condors are very handsome, I believe, but still not quite
right. So then I hit on kestrel, still a hunting bird but smaller and
I think sleeker. So there. It has no secret meaning. The only birds
we have around here are pigeons and sometimes a gull or two flies past
my window. The East River is only a few blocks away. I like birds a
lot. But I don't like to see them caged. I once was given a parakeet
as a birthday present. The giver did not know me very well and my
aversion to caged birds had never come up. But another reason for not
living with a caged bird is that you have to clean the cage. And then
there is Mimi, my tortoise shell cat. At present, she is sprawled on
my computer desk, just next to my left hand and with her head resting
against the side of the monitor. Sometimes she falls asleep there.

Do you remember Wolfgang Grill from Vienna? He was very active in the
newsgroup in those early days. I believe he is past his 10 year-
mark. It's on June 6 but I don't remember the year. Well, I have
kept in touch with him and yesterday, in my mail, I recieved a hand-
drawn calligraphy message from him in Japanese, congratulating me on
10 years. He is studying the language and has been to Japan several
times. I see him whenever he comes to New York.

Gibraltar? Every time I see that name in print or hear it mentioned,
I think of an insurance company. I think it was Prudential.
Gibraltar was its logo. Strong as the Rock of Gibraltar. When I was
a child, Prudendtial used to distribute little booklets of Christmas
carols with both words and music.

Well, there I go, off on another disjointed trip down memory lane.
Basta.

Joyce aka Kestrel

Thanks Kestrel,

And it is a bueatiful falcon, at that. I can understand the choice.

Much love,
Bald Eagle
