Lizzy,
I wasn't sure about your egg a day comment but we have a rooster and get an
egg a day from each of our laying hens. Doofus has quit laying... eggs
that is... but we have found her sleeping here and there. We keep thinking
she's dead but she comes back every time!
With hope and heart,

PS. Your farm does sound wonderful. I can't wait for you to get a chicken.
But, Lizzy, if you chicken is your pet, do you still eat their
offspring? <G>

There are no offspring without a rooster, don't ya know. Certainly I
would not get a rooster, since this is the only way to get an egg a
day.
I used to have a farm, so I know a little bit about farm animals. I
had 5 cows, 20 pigs, about 40 rabbits (New Zealand Whites) , chickens
(White Leghorns and Rode-Island Reds) ducks, geese, ponies, and horse
of course. I also had 1/4 acre of veg. Garden, wild grapes and
strawberries. Berry bushes (raspberries, blueberries, poisenberries,
gooseberries, currents, both black and red) I used to make wine out
of the wild grapes, soda pop out of Elderberry flowers, Dandelion wine
and Cordial from the left over cherry juice from Comstock Cannery that
was close by.
I had a pet pig, named Sweetypoo and a pet duck named Tweet-tweet.
I also had a pond (about 1 acre in size), courtesy of the beavers and
stocked it with bullheads (a small veriety of catfish) that we cought
at another large pond and usually had so many that we could not eat
them all and therefore they ended up in the pond. We cought frogs with
a pole and a pice of red flannel attached on the hook for frog leg
feast, one snapping turtle that made excellent soup (but they take to
long to die so I did not want any more, besides they can bite you even
when the head is no longer attached to the body)
I canned tomatoes, peaches, pears and all kinds of veggies and made
marmalade with crabapples and plumbs. I made Chinese plumb sauce and
cough syrup out of black radishes. I made Elderberry syrup and my
dirt cellar was filled with canned goods that lasted all winter and
then some.
I never ate any of my animals other then the eggs from the chickens
and ducks.
So now I want a chicken so I get one fresh egg a day with a beautiful
golden yolk not the pale yello you find in the stores that have been
sitting on shelves for weeks.
Probably will get one of those fancy looking chicks, you know, the
quiet type, because I don't want the neighbors to complain.

I can not believe that Doofus is still alive. Not really good for
anything but laying around or the soup pot - ha, ha
Well the thing is hens lay eggs with or without a rooster, but there
would not be any chicks without a rooster.
Sue, California is not the only state that grows Almonds. by the way.
