Reading these posts, drew a familiar connection for me, again. Quitting
smoking and depression. Most of us know about, or have experienced,
depression as one of the common side effects of quitting smoking. The
other common element is the sometimes flippant treatment of both issues by
those who haven't experienced it first-hand. (I also include a lot of
mental health professionals and medical professionals) While we smoked,
or early in our quits most of us heard the lack-of-understanding comments
from those who have no clue what is involved in trying to quit an
addiction. People think we can "just quit". While we are depressed,
those who know no better think we should just "get over it".
Edna, I'm very glad you're sticking around AS3 for some understanding
support. I've 'been there, done that' and empathize with what you're
going through. I have no solutions to offer you, (I'm sure others will),
but I promise non-conditional support as you get through this. And, I
KNOW you'll get through this.
Damn the idiots who think they know it all.

It occurs to me that most of the people to whom I find myself drawn, and
most of the people with whom I have managed to forge any sort of
emotional alliances that have lasted more than an hour or so are...
all... well, fucked up in some way.
I find that people who know suffering tend to be kinder and more
compassionate -- if they manage not to break under the load. So I think
it's natural that people who've experienced some of these fairly unique
and indescribable life experiences and emotional baggage would recognize
it in each other and appreciate each other's company. Trying to
communicate with somebody about these things who doesn't have any
experience with them can be frustrating and alienating -- not that there
aren't plenty of kind people out there who've managed to dodge the
depression bullet; it's just that you don't know whether they're kind or
hurtful until you get down into it with them, and sometimes that's just
too late.
I include a lot of mental health professionals in the category of
non-sufferers with no compassion, who just send me back to my bedroom,
door closed, crying.
I'm sticking around for now, anyway. You are my friend, Jef.
