Re: Ping Marv

Thanks for the compliment, but I'm far from being an expert on these matters and certainly encourage others to jump in and offer their opinions/advice.

It is possible that the file that may be missing or corrupted may be "shdocvw.dll". This executable application, which is a Windows system file, uses Internet Explorer components to perform the navigation, history maintenance, favourites maintenance, HTML parsing and rendering, and so on and can certainly prevent you from opening links.

There's additional information here:
http://www.auditmypc.com/process/shdocvw.asp

And from microsoft (watch line wrap)
http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?q=download+url+shdocvw.dll&qsc0=0&FORM=QBME1&l=1&mkt=en-US&PageType=99

Since this is a windows component file, and if the download dialog says that you'll be downloading *FROM* Microsoft, then I would proceed.

Sue, please note that you're kind of on your own at this point and, although I can offer my opinion, I can't guarantee that this solution will work for your particular case. As with anything...please use caution.

Also, have you ever used a program such as CrapCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/ )
or even a commercial product ...I think Norton has something similar?

You see, what happens is that when you add/remove programs - more often than not you're left over with crap. And this crap can cause your computer to run slow and in some cases with errors.

Now, I don't know your set up, but I would recommend the following:

1) Ensure you are up to date WRT patches, fixes and so forth.
2) Upgrade your IE to v6 or v7.
3) Download, install and run CCleaner.
4) Use CCleaner monthly or as necessary.

Of course, before doing any of this - make sure you've done a complete backup.

I'm a big fan of CCleaner and use it weekly to keep my 1 laptop, 5 virtual machines, and 1 workstation running smooth. Then again the way I beat on my machines, I need something to clean up after me. ;-)

Hope this helps or gets your started.

Echo, can you give me some computer advice? You seem to be about the
most knowledgeable person here (no offense to anyone else) as far as
the mechanics of every day use go. My problem is that I used IE which
I like just fine but now when I click on a link such as you have below
my computer can no longer find the page, I get the "this page cannot
be displayed" and I'm advised that the web site wants the following
add on - "Shell Doc Object and Control Library from Microsoft
Corporation". Then I'm told to download it. This scares me. I don't
know what it is, tried to do a Google search, found tons of hits and
understood not a damned thing. So, I have Netscape and figured I'd
just change to that. Well, I can't figure out how to make that the
default browser. In my old computer, every time I used another
available browser I got a message asking me if I wanted to make that
the default. That isn't happening. I sent an e-mail to the help
people and didn't get a response. I'd rather use the IE because
that's where all my bookmarks are and I don't know any easy way to
switch them. I tried Opera with the last computer and just prefer
either IE or Netscape. I have no problem with Bill Gates. I'd just
like to be able to click on the links that are posted here and open
the URL's instead of having open Netscape and then copy and paste
them.
Oddly enough, of all my bookmarks in IE the only one I can get into is
my bank. Everything else gives me that above message.
Now, I'm going to copy and past your links to look at your pictures.
