How to Quit Smoking in Ten Seconds or Less

Here is one way to do that. Picture in your mind two photographs of
yourself, one on the right, and one on the left. In the photograph on
the right, you are seated comfortably at a dining room table with a
delicious looking plate of Thanksgiving food placed before you. There
is a sparkling clean glass of ice water standing next to your plate.
Your hands are folded comfortably in your lap as you beam your smile
proudly at the camera.
Now imagine that the photograph on the left side is almost identical to
the one on the right, with 3 big differences. First the glass of water
is a nasty, murky brown, and you see that there is a cigarette ***
floating in the glass, seeping an ugly, nasty trail of amber colored
tar into the water. There is a smoldering cigarette *** hanging out of
your mouth, too, with a half-inch length of filthy ash dangling
precariously over your plate of food, and some ash may have already
fallen into the food. Finally, you do not look proud, and you are not
smiling.
Which photo would you rather show to your grandchildren? Even more
important, since these images are two opposing definitions of yourself,
and your mind cannot hold on to both of them for long, which one would
you rather let go? Do not allow yourself to be defined by the picture
on the left. Make the image on the right the defining image of your
life.
Here is a more active variation of the above method. Imagine yourself
standing before a small wooden table in the middle of the desert. There
is a full glass of sparkling, clean water resting on the table. You are
just finishing your last cigarette, and as you take your last puff, you
drop the cigarette *** into the glass of water. You watch in disgust
as the ugly brown tars and toxins seep into the water, and yet you are
happy, because you know this was your last cigarette.
Now you begin to walk away from the table, and in your mind you see
yourself simply walking away from the smoking habit for good. It will
be a long walk, but you are happy that you are finally able to walk
away from your smoking habit. Day by day, you put more and more
distance between yourself and this image of the cigarette *** floating
in the glass of water. Just imagine yourself walking further and
further away from your old habit.
Now, if you should develop a craving, allow that craving to be
represented by a strong thirst that you develop as you trek along on
your long walk. In the distance, you see another table with 2 glasses
resting on its surface. You are so thirsty now, and you hurry to reach
the table. As you approach it, you find that one glass of water is cold
and sparkling clean, with sunlight glistening through tiny drops of
condensation that have formed on its sides. The other glass is the same
one you dropped your last cigarette into. The dirty, lukewarm water is
a murky brown and reeking of tar and ash as the bloated cigarette ***
floats on the surface.
Which glass will you choose to quench your thirst?
