1. Take a deep breath when you sit down. Eat your food slowly. It will
probably start tasting better when you stop smoking.
2. After a meal - get busy
Wash the dishes.
Play with the kids.
Take a walk.
Most importantly, substitiute an activity for the cigarette that was part of your after-meal routine.
3. Don't skip meals
If you do, you may get too hungry and want to use tobacco for a burst of
energy.
4. Eat breakfast (even a banana)!
This will help you avoid craving tobacco if you are used to a cup of coffee and a cigarette in the morning.
5. Drink lots of water
Water is important too quitting smoking, so keep a water bottle handy!
6. Drink less caffeine to reduce your urge to smoke
The effect of caffeine doubles while you are quitting smoking!
The jitters might also make you overeat.
Try drinking decaf, herbal tea or juice instead.
7. Keep foods high in fat out of the house so they won't temp you:
Foods high in fat have lots of calories.
8. Keep your hands busy
It's hard to smoke while doing certain things like gardening or wood
working.
9. Keep substitutes around
There are a lot of things you can put in your mouth besides cigarettes:
toothpicks
cinnamon sticks
straws
flavored rice cakes
sugar-free gum
mints
10. Avoid alcohol
Alcohol has lots of calories. It also may make you crave a cigarette. You
might eat to satisfy that craving instead. Drink something besides alcohol.
Avoid bars and parties for a while.
11. Avoid smokers for a while
Go to non-smoking places and take work breaks in a new place.
Ask friends who smoke to not smoke around you.
Make sure you have substitutes and low-fat snacks with you all the time.
12. Drive with pride
Listen to the radio or books on tape.
Put sunflower seeds in a clean car ashtray.
Keep some hard candy in the glove compartment.
13. Treat yourself to great experiences - reward yourself for your hard work staying cigarette free!
Work on a your favorite project.
Watch a game on TV.
Take a bubble bath.
Read a good book.
Rent a video.
Buy fresh flowers.
Get a massage.
Take a walk in the park.
Call an old friend.
