| Yeah-- I've seen that trailer. Not sure if I'd watch the movie, though.
The
| idea of someone pretending to be retarded and inserting himself in the
| Special Olympics for...whatever his motive is...(?) is kind of
off-putting,
| on the surface of it. Maybe he's trying to nab crooked gamblers who're
| trying to rig the contests...? Doing it just to win is...odd. What are the
| prizes, anyway? Are they THAT desirable...?

I believe he's doing it to pay for someone's much needed operation. Of
course, in real life, the only thing you win at the special olympics is a
medal. In the movie it's apparently cash.

| Now, I have to say, I found the idea of retarded kids fending off zombies
| ("The Special Dead") actually sort of amusing and even (dare I say it?)
| vaguely empowering. They're struggling against their limitations while
| banding together to fight mindless evil. Pretty ambitious stuff. I 've no
| idea if actual mentally handicapped kids were used in it, as there's very
| little info on the film's website.

Yes, to me it sounds amusing as well. I'm all for empowerment. I didn't
find the clip at all humorous though. Hopefully the movie has some(humor),
if that's what was intended.

| Johnny Knoxville (a good-looking kid) "passing" as retarded for some
reason
| (even with actual retarded kids in the film) strikes me as just not
| particularly humorous. That's probably influenced largely by the fact that
| he has so far made his career largely via videotaped groin injuries,
| self-inflicted pain and rampant questionable behavior. That's just a first
| impression. Perhaps there are mitigating elements to the story that might
| make it more palatable...?

I not sure him playing someone mentally challenged is a stretch. Who knows
if it's funny or not.

The original post seemed to be about if mentally challenged people could be
seen as funny in a movie. If you'd go see it before condemning it out of
hand?

It was my thought that this other movie fit the same bill. I happened to
see the clip yesterday and thought it fit right into this discussion.

I did a bit of googling and it's supposed to be funny and is being touted on
the Special Olympics website.

The premise being can a regular guy be taught a life lesson by some mentally
challenged folks. LOL Kind of like them dealing with zombies.
