I'm looking for a new computer. I need a CD burner and figure I may as well get a DVD burner as well. What are they called?
When I get to the ordering pages There are several choices, none which make much sense to me. "DVD-ROM; CD/RW" Does that mean it just plays DVD's but will burn CD's? "DVD-ROM; CD-ROM" ??? I can't find a FAQ that explains this.
Also, I knew that one of you kind souls was just DYING to explain it to me. With hope and heart, Kathleen

If you just order the cd-rom you can only listen to CD's and not DVD's and you can't burn anything.
If you get just the DVD-rom - you can listen to both CD's and DVD's but again you can't burn anything.
What you probably want to get (and what most of the newer computers have) is a DVD+RW and that means that the data is rerecordable (can be erased and rewritten many times and you can play all CD's and DVD's (watch movies etc.) You want to buy the DVD-RW disks to do this as opposed to the DVD-R disks that only record once and then the data becomes permanent on disk.
Also it is great for backing up your computer -
