Yesterday DH was outside puttering around in his 'pole-barn' - basically a roof over the 2 boats and all his other 'stuff', when he looked behind some things for some wire and found a nice little stack of.... FRESH EGGS! Whooooohoooooooo! Hens are laying. Now I need to figure out if it's OK to eat them (we threw those 12 away, just to be on the safe side) since we are still feeding medicated chick starter. I must get some layer feed today.
I called everyone last night and shared the news! lol

I am not Lynn but I can answer your question. (I have had chickens for over 20 yrs) You can check for freshness by putting the eggs in water. If they float, they are bad. If they stay on the bottom, fresh. I still break my eggs into a seperate bowl before using, just in case. Fresh eggs are sooo much better. The color and tatste is nothing like store bought. When my nephews were younger and used to stay here, they loved scrambled eggs. They kept asking how come my eggs tatsed so much better. The down side is fresh eggs are bad for making hard boiled eggs as shells are harder to peel off. As far as medicated feed, the label should tell you how long the holding period is. I don't buy feed for my chickens. I just feed table scraps and then they eat whatever they can scrounge. The poor cats have to eat fast or loose their cat food. :) Enjoy the eggs!
