Hey all, it's been quite some time since I've been active in this
newsgroup. I hope everyone is doing as well as they can be. It's been
great reading through some of the more recent posts and remembering
how nice the banter can be. :)
I'm wondering if anyone has had experiences with vision symptoms that
may be (or at least resemble) optical migraines. This is my second
time experiencing them (first was in November 2007). Both times have
been pretty much identical. It starts with a flashing zig-zaggy line
in the upper corner of my peripheral vision. In November it was on the
left side, this current episode is on the right side.
This zig-zag line then moved to about center of vision with everything
toward the peripheral distorted but visible. After getting better and
worse for a period of several hours the symptom reduces to a flashing
zig-zaggy circular light in the upper corner of my peripheral. This
occurs off and on for periods of a couple minutes to over an hour for
several days. I see the flashing whether my eyes are open, shut or
some combination. In November it lasted about 4 days I think and this
time it's lasted for about a week so far but is occurring less often
at this point (not at all yesterday).
When I went to an optometrist they took a picture of the inside of my
eyeballs and saw nothing of concern. I was not experiencing these
symptoms at the time. When I described the symptoms they suggested
that it sounds like an optical migraine. There is no pain associated
with the symptom. I did report that I have MS.
I just had an MRI last week as I am seeing a new neurologist after
moving away from my previous one. I won't get the results of the MRI
until mid-June. When I saw the neurologist I had not yet had my second
occurrence of these symptoms and I don't actually remember whether I
even mentioned them. I was having the symptoms at the time of the MRI
and reported them to the MRI technicians.
Anyway, if anyone has had a similar experience either as an MS symptom
or something else, I'd really like to hear about it if you're willing
to share. Overall I'm not too worried about this, but it is quite
annoying.

Lossandra,
Hey, welcome back!
I first presented with Optic Neuritis, and have had WIDE ranging
assortment of symptoms
over the 23 years since, but I have never heard of the *specific* set
of ones you described here. Of course, I am not a Doctor, nor do I
play one on TV (or the 'net for that matter!). My first suggestion
would be to discuss the matter, even over a brief telephone
consultation, with a Neurologist. While an optometrist can be very
skilled in their art, we (meaning PWMS) sometimes have needs that
requires the specific skill set of a qualified MD!
I hope things work out for you with your new Neuro... I have had the
same one for 24 years now and I can't imagine changing at this point.
Of course he is a few years older than I am, so eventually (grim
thought here) I my HAVE to get a new one!!
Be well, and stick around! We have a whole NEW gang of crazies
now !!
.
