dave - tell us what you really think!<BG>
seriously - there is a smidgen of fact in your ire being directed at
walmart - but it is also a gross simplification of global economics and
this country's trade policies as evolved over time.
a) we rose to the heights of economic power based upon the resources we
had available, and, also with the policies in place at the time.
inclusive therein were issues of pollution, waste, and shear monatary
abuse this country used against our trade partners of the time
altogether it brought us to economic prominance in the world
and, we learned from our mistakes to some degree and began the process
of correcting the ills that we wrought upon ourselves. but that also
means that we don't have the clout we once did.
b) other emerging economies [china, india, indonesia, etc] are doing
what we once did...and following our example of past practices, they are
successful
like it or not, this country is faced with a 'flat earth' - one in
which corporations operate globally.
it isn't walmart - it's virtually all manufacturing, cars, textiles,
electronics, medicines, steel, plastics, the list goes on that have
shopped for cheaper labor, fewer regulations, and less restrictions than
what this country 'now' has in place - and they are to be found in other
locales around the globe.
and don't forget 'call centers' for insurance, tech suport, almost
anything that requires inbound 'answers' for consumers - more than half
are now off-shore. and those are hundreds of thousands of jobs
the various administrations in power over the past 40 years haven't done
a very good job in understanding how it works under the new global
establishment, nor have they been proactive 'enough' in protecting our
interests. and finding solutions
yet it is we, the voters - in politics, in stock ownership, and with our
checkbooks, that actaully have been in control - and that control has
been one of 'they' should do something about all this.
we vote 'em in, we guage success of a company and it's stock based upon
quarterly returns, and we buy the cheaper products - 'we', the great
mass of individuals, are 'they'
as to the specific point of walmart - i repeat - all insurance, whether
something like your auto, or bc/bs, or one where the company is
'self-insured' and uses a another to administer it - will try to recover
monies from a second sourch.
i mean no disrespect to you - imo
to focus 'just' on walmart is to miss the larger issue altogether - as
long as there is a profit motive involved in any form of health care
this will occur. the legal obligation and duty is not to the covered
individual [who gets only the exact terms spelled out in the policy],
but rather to the stock holder of the company. those stock holders
insist upon maximum returns - and they are 'us'. as to walmart - it's a
publicly traded company - we are the stockholders demanding they show
us a great return.
private individuals, pension funds, investment groups, et al
what you are really objecting to is only a symbol of what our society
has become.
as the old pogo cartoon said long ago:
"we have met the enemy, and he is us'
to all:
whatever political flavor you think best - register, participate, be
active
vote this fall on the economic issues and they include health care
be well

pretty much any insurance coverage will do this
perhaps it's a bit unfair to focus on walmart, the situation is one that
is faced regardless of where one works. it's easy to blame walmart, much
harder to have the time and energy to promote systemic change including
all those whose stories don't make the news.
"Unfair to focus on WalMart"? THE WalMart that has been responsible
for nearly the entire industrial base of the United States moving to
China together with the loss of untold millions of manufacturing jobs?
The one flying the "support our troops and vets" stuff in their
entrances to be seen by their customers as soon as one walks in the
door?
The WalMart Corporation is a cancer on the face of the US.
