Re: Walk MS 2008

the MS walk is good for newly DX'd folks too,,,

it allows you to see and talk to others with MS, after my dx i really
worked on our local MS walk,,, in Langley BC,,, it was their first year
being involved,,, i think,,,

once i got into it,, i started rasing alot of money, and found it was not
hard to do this, my EX passed around donation forms at her work,, i went to
every friend i had, family, , and neighbors,,,

i raised the highest amt my second year and third year,, for langley,,,
4th year i put all the money on my son's donation sheet,,, as he was now old
enough to walk too,,, - the really short route,,,

that year he won the prize for raising the most money for a child under 10?
i think,,, but- NOT for langley,, he won for the ENTIRE PROVINCE of BC!!!!
raised by kid under the age limit,,, sure we did most of the work,, but,,,
the point was to raise money and Awareness,, langley got noticed ,,
bitime, with 2 royal bank managers placing 1ST and 2ND for highest
individual money total in BC!!!! one guy raised 29k,, the other 18k,,

my son got over 1800 in donations,,!!!! i learned to milk it- people seem
to be more charitable when donating to a child,, so we did better for the
cause , by pooling our donations for my son and just gettin the minimums for
me,my ex .

i also donated most prizes i got back to the MS society,,, cept the cool
t-shirts,hoodies for me to advertise the Ms walk all year round!!!!

it feels good to participate,,, same people -core group of MSERS show up
everytime,, from langley,,

its is So Big now, langley has 2 MS walk sites!!!!! each with its own
totals,, prizes, and media,,, lots of community involvement here,,,

it can be overwhelming,, for some,,, might be hard to deal with,,, but all
in all, i think as people who suffer from this disease it would be a good
thing to at least check one out ,, dont have to walk , its fun staying
behind too , while the healthy folks do the walkin for us,,, i got to talk
with many msers when i could not do the walk one year or2,,, stay behind
and eat lots of breadgarden food!!!!LOLOL treats,,, coffeee,,

one years walk was a sad story for me,,, for some retarded reason i
decided i could do the 11k route, not the 6k or 3 k even,, ,, and it rained
the entire way- no , it was a monsoon downpour,,,

but i was determioned NOT to let tranverse myelitis attack stop me from
completeing the walk,, like i was in a fight,,,

stupid- i payed for it,,, made symptoms worse,, my ex went ahead and got
car,,, to pick me up,,, ,,, took forever waiting not being able to walk,
sittin on someones lawn, humilliating,, everyone on the walk was miles
ahead of me,, i was alone, the safety checkpoints had been closed,, ,, as
soon as mass pack of walkers went past,, they would shut them down due to
the very bad storm,,,

welll ,, there was also- no bathroom set up along routes - city hadnt
thought of it,, - people with bladder issues 11k walk???

but wait it gets even worse---

i was drenched,,, soaked, by spirits dead,, i got rescued finally,,,

went back to the main site in city park,,, to get a hot coffee, , get my
lunch, and coockies,,, listen to the band,, see who won the totals, etc
etc,,,

well when i got back,, the place had been shut down,, people had vanished,,
gone home, the rain was incredible, pounding,, hard,, no food left, people
trying to fight the wind and get tents/canopy thing down,,, packed up, band
gone stage empty,,,

i was so delated,, where were all the people,,, where were the rescue
folks??

today they have porta potties and rescue cars travelling along routes,,, i
have since seen many folks needing them,, going to far and needing car
rides back,,,

i did help get these things at the future ms walks in langley,,, it takes
one person to go thru this and then we learn what needed,,,

they always now check the route for possible people who had trouble along
route,,,

some of us are stubborn and will say-- shit -11k???? i can do that easy,,,
MS aint bothering me or stoppin me,,, and we go for it, and ,,,,, stuff
happens,,,

moral of my story,,, let them that walk good walk for you/us, stay behind
and get first pick of the best breadgarden sandwiches!!LOL

cheers
bobbyD

Well, I wish I was very young and naive, but I'm not....I'm almost 56 and
I was just diagnosed in November. My daughter was diagnosed 10 years ago
when she was 23. Her father had MS and I took care of him until he became
an abusive (physical and emotional) alcoholic who refused help. He died
about 10 years ago and 19 years ago I married the most wonderful man in
the universe (as far as I can tell!)

I was just being very passionate in my efforts to raise money for this
walk, since every other walk, I've walked for my daughter....now I'm
walking for both of us. We are both still ambulatory so far, with the
occasional help of a cane. And my friends really came through for me when
I was undergoing a week's worth of IV solu-medrol. But since then, they
have become very complacent and some avoid me completely. So I gave up
trying to get them to help out by walking, donating, or even just
spreading the word.

Since I've lived with this disease in one way or another for most of my
adult life, I'm adamant about finding a cure or even a med where I don't
have to do shots every night! I should have realized that most everyone
on here would be doing the walk in their area, but I didn't see any
reference to the walk in the posts, so thought I'd give this a try. Sorry
for being so naive.

And Tick, I have pretty thick skin, so I wasn't toooo upset with your
reply. It just took me by surprise and I didn't think of the fact that it
could be construed as a scam. That never occurred to me so in some ways,
I am very naive!! All's well..........Leslie

leslie if your real young and just got over excited about your ms
chapter then i understand....

there's always a snake oil salesmen that will stop by selling a cure. or
someone wanting some money... i tend to get very excited it's part of my
nature.... and i would never change that in me...

tell us a little bit about who you are. btw my good friend donn on
this group will be going to the ms walk. donn and i are going to race
each other on our scooters :-) which sounds very fun to me
