You would think that I would have learned my lesson, from the first

I'm a slow learner. :-(

I can understand your frustration, but this is ADVENTURE!!!
Had you just stayed home, your day would have been booring. But
nooooooooo......you went out and got into the game, and you can't win
unless you're in the game. And just being in the game means your
efforts are noticed and appreciated. I am sure your wife just loves
her BD cake and the fact that you remembered her BD and the fact that
YOU went out to get it (even if you did crash and burn...ok char a
little).
When you were a kid your adventures meant exploring in the woods or
something similar. Now, adventure is getting out, tipping over your
chair, and meeting nice people that help you out of the street and
back into it. Maybe not quite as fun as when you were a kid, but
adventure none the less. You got to meet some very nice people that
you otherwise would not have known existed.
Heal up...get back in the game...and open up to the next adventure. It
doesn't suck to be you...it sucks not to.
