Important Posting Tip (Was: Re: Santa Will Make It On Time)

First, let me say Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday to all!

Now the posting tip.

I had to do some investigating as to why I didn't/couldn't see Tick's
original post, that Herb quoted below. It didn't appear on my ISP's
news server, nor on Google Groups.

After doing a search, I found it on a usenet archive site:
http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Alt/alt.support.mult-sclerosis/2007-12/msg00550.html

The reason I couldn't find it on my server, or Google, is because of the
picture attached to the post. Attaching a file creates a binary part to
the post, where the attached file in encoded. The exception to this, is
any form of text-based file, such as plain text, and html, among many
others. Because they are text files, they do not require encoding.

My ISP outsources its newsgroup service to Giganews, as I believe
several (at least) other ISPs do. Giganews, as I understand it, will
only accept posts containing binary parts, to groups that contain some
form of the word 'binary' in the group name.

Since our group, alt.support.mult-sclerosis, does not meet that
criteria, they consider it a text-only newsgroup, and will block any
posts containing a binary part.

Google, as far as I know, does not archive any binary postings at all.

They won't just strip the binary part, in this case, the attached
picture, and post the text of the message, they will reject the entire
post. Thats why I couldn't find it, initially.

Had it not been for Herb quoting it, and my memory working (somewhat),
thinking "Hey, I don't remember seeing Tick post that", I never would
have known about it. Without the quote, I would have assumed that he
was referencing a post I had already seen, but just didn't remember.

So, just a friendly tip. If you attach a picture to a post, some of us
may not see the post at all, not even the text part.

BTW, Tick, thats a neat little Santa you have there. ;-)

Glad to hear it, Tick. It's been a little chilly up here in the mornings,
but beautiful in the afternoon. I got moved last week again. Got a nicer apt
with a walk in shower, same complex, but still a PITA.

I wish you well, my East Texas friend, Have as good a holiday as possible!

I was afraid for a bit that Santa was having so much fun with me and
Bonnie the bird dawg that he wasn't going to make his rounds this year.
Well he caught his limit on the lake and I had to explain he had
obligations so he must go. With his creel full of fresh fish, some of
my special smoked venison sausage, a back pack of Lone Star beer and hay
for his reindeer I sent him on his way.

Before leaving he asked what I wanted for Christmas. Peace and Goodwill
I replied. He said I already had it, it was in my heart and that's the
only place anyone 'could' find it. In their own hearts. He said he'd
give me something else instead, a week of absolutely beautiful sunshine
and warm breezes in which Bonnie and I could work on the sailboat, take
a few leisurely rides and just sit and pray for my brothers in uniform
who are doing the job I can no longer do. 'Bless 'em.

And bless my wife and her family who continue to sit in vigil and bless
my ASMS family.
