What does your dr do when you get an new MS attack? I was diagnosed in
97 and this is only my second attack. The dr is so casual about it. I'm
scared to death cause I can't walk without my walker anymore. And the
pain is very bad. He ordered an MRI of the brain but stilll waiting for
an appt. Also, how do you tell if it's an MS attack or a stroke?
hi Diane,
back when i was RR, i'd get oral steroids in the early days; IV
Solu-Medrol later in the disease course. a time came -- my neuro said
that it did for many people -- when steroids were no longer effective
at cutting down the severity or duration of a flare, and i haven't
taken any since, but until that point, Solu-Medrol, with or witout oral
Prednisone taper, always did help.
i don't knw how to tell if it might be a stroke -- if it was me, what
I'd do would probably be go to the emergency room, if your neuro can't
see you soon enough. if insurance coverage for E.R. visits is a
problem, then i'd probably get on the phone, tell them *strongly*
enough so that they really understand, that you're worried, you NEED to
be seen soon, and if he doesn't have any appointments available in the
near future, you're afraid you might be having a non-M.S. related
problem, and could his office arrange for you to be seen by someone
else to make sure? that will probably get their attention if for no
other reason than fear of malpractice lawsuits!
seriously, i'd make double-dang sure the doc's office knew you were
worried and in pain, and not only want, but *need* to be seen by a
medical pro ASAP. if that doesn't shake them loose, then it would be
back to Plan A -- the E.R. they *should* be able to tell if you're
having a stroke or some other non-M.S. problem.
if it is just another relapse....well, the good news is when you're RR,
relapses also include remissions! they'll eventually resolve on their
own; roids just help speed the process. as far as the pain goes, have
the doc give you something to keep you comfortable as possible while
you wait it out. there's no reason you OR your doc should avoid this;
if the pain is bad, then breaking up the 'pain cycle' early on is a
good (and medically approved) idea.
other than that, just kick back, rest, and do the things you enjoy the
most without guilt -- music, teevee, reading, napping in between. think
of it as a 'vacation' -- that's what i did when i was RR; just a
psychlogical trick, but it did seem to help me -- 'i'm not being a lazy
git and avoiding my duties; i'm on 'vacation' and sitting around on the
couch, listening to the Ramones and watching Casablanca, sleeping when
i'm tired, and letting anyone petty enough to worry about dusty shelves
dust them him- or her- self, LOL! ;->
i hope you're feeling better soon. make sure your doc knows you're
worried and just want to see someone, then ride the relapse out, as
most of us have done, and survived, and come out the other side
stronger!
