Dory, the only one i'm aware of is the one that linked an M.S.
diagnosis with smoking, and it was the same increased risk for both
current and *former* smokers. so, supposedly, if you've EVER smoked,
your chances of getting diagnosed with M.S. are increased -- there's no
statistical benefit for those who used to smoke but quit. the only way
to avoid the 'smoking increases your chances of an M.S. diagnosis'
thing is to never smoke in the first place.
i'm not aware of any studies specificaly regarding those who've already
been dx'd and then quit, just anecdotal evidence, a lot of it gleaned
from right here at ASMS. as far as the increased risk due to smoking,
though, it applies to both current and former smokers. might be a good
way to keep your kids from ever starting -- when you're young, healthy,
and 'immortal,' you don't think about stuff like cancer and emphysema,
but if you're the young, healthy 'immortal' child of someone with M.S.,
it's a lot more in your face, so maybe some of our kids will stay
smoke-free in hopes of avoiding M.S. actually, i think a lot more of
our kids are stang smoke-free to begin with -- just the nature of the
times, maybe? it's a Good Thing, I believe, whatever the reason. or
maybe it's just a west coast thing -- we've got the highest percentage
of non-smokers in the nation in CA. also the highest percentage of
uninsured people -- the "Health of the State" report from last year had
both an A+ and a D in it, for those 2 health factors.
