John, if you're still reading, i've got a question for you. totallly
coincidentally, after having read and posted in this thread, and
mentioned the "gun safety seminar" at Tam's school when she was
younger, I AGAIN encountered an article, written by doctors, about
"children and gun safety," and these docs said the exact same thing the
school folks had said back in the day -- the ONLY way to safely have
firearms and minors in the same house is to keep un unloaded gun locked
in a box, with the ammo stored in a separate locked box, both kept
hidden and "out of reach."

my daughter is 23 now, so it's moot (she never shot anyone or herself
when she *was* a minor, and now she's an adult), but in my current
state of physical health, there's no way in the world i'd be able to
stand on a step-ladder, unlock two boxes, remove their respective
contents, climb back down, and load the gun in time to stop anything
faster than drying paint. :{

i've always liked reading your posts, and respect your opinion very
much. what do you think? do you have any links to "gun safety programs"
that would promote safety, both for minor children, and for their
disabled parents who may not be physically able to do all the locked
boxes inside other locked boxes kept up high with ammo and unloaded gun
kept in separate locations 'advice'? i know your kids are also grown,
but you seem thoughtful enough to have given the matter consideration.
what do you think?

because when my daughter WAS young, i was always interested in her
safety, but had hoped for more from a "gun safety seminar" than "Don't
own one, or if you absolutely MUST (you weirdo), then separate locked
boxes for unloaded gun and ammo, store one on the top shelf of the
closet and another inside a locked dresser, and never tell the children
that they're there." (Wouldn't that last increase the likelihood of
their coming across it accidentally, and NOT having safety instructions
or knowing anything about it?)
