Still waiting for word....

what I see on teevee and in print, makes it look as though everyone who
survived Katrina has now had the opportunity to make contact with their
loved ones from other areas, but we're still waiting, and it's getting
pretty scary. so much national attention is on NOLA, and i guess i
understand it, but Biloxi was flattened too, no electricity, no phones,
evacuations and families separated, we're not seeing as much coverage.

we signed up with all the "contact and info" places; got one single
third-hand report that a cousin and her three sons were spotted in one
of the shelters -- no word since then. everyone manning the info points
says at this point, there's nothing to do but wait. I remember seeing
the Baptists bringing cell phones in to one shelter, but no idea how
many, or if everyone got a chance to use them, or what.

those of you with loved ones in the Gulf coast region -- HAVE you all
heard from everyone by now? after 9/11, we were able to contact our
folks in DC by that same evening. during the '03 wildfires locally, we
kept in almost constant contact with our family outside the area. this
has been a whole nother story.

there was another report from someone who went back through the area;
we heard our cousins' house is still sort-of there, roof peeled off,
lots of structural damage, the pecan trees scattered all over the
county...the guy frm the neighborhood said there were no vehicles
around, so most likely they evacced before the worst hit, but i don't
know -- there were no trees around either, who knows if the cars were
driven out, stolen, floated away, or what.

i'm worried, i don't have anything of substance to say really, except
if you're someone who's stuck waiting and worrying, feeling helpless
because family and friends are going through this and you haven't got
any first-hand news yet -- i'm with you, and we can all try to stay
strong together.

i have a sister wh works at the State dept., and on 9/11 there was a
false report that a car bomb had been detonated AT the state dept., we
were evacuated TWICE during the fire storms of 10/03, and THIS is
scarier than either of those situations on a persnal level. when
there's nothing you can do BUT wait for word, it's very frightening to
be so helpless.

this is coming out all wrong -- not like those of us who have loved
ones no yet heard from are in the same situation as the people actually
trapped there, but that it's pure plain hell not knowing, and i
defnitely DO feel for others feeling helpless, waiting for word.

God bless Katrina's victims, and every friend, family member, or loved
one who still waits for word from or about them.
