KKT, wringing our hands, pronouncing sympathetic verbiage, and writing
checks will not solve the basic problems that many of these people - not all
of them poor - will have over the next weeks. Especially hard hit were
hospital patients transferred to the Superdome. Five people died at the
Superdome yesterday. The stadium is now surrounded by a 5-ft moat. There
are hundreds of people on what's left of freeways near that arena, because
they can't cross that moat. Two levees have now failed and an AP story says
that the water will rise to approximately 3 ft above sea level. There is
neither drinking water nor electricity but for emergency generators and
stocks. The rising waters may soon drown the few emergency generators.
There are bodies in the water, on the streets. There is looting, some of it
done by New Orleans' famously corrupt and inept police. So there must be
some dry-eyed judgements about what to do first just to enable the relief
efforts to make it to the people in need.
