<snip>
sorry, I am late into this thread, but WHY?

my pen has a perfectly good cover which protects the needle
quite adequately. I usually get about 10-12 uses out of a
single needle before I accidentally bend it. I also find that I
prefer the LONG ones, over the short needles, but that may only
be my personal taste

What pen do you have, Ted?
M.

currently I have the US standard, prefills. But over the years,
I have used different types. No difference with any of them. Before I was on Medicare, I had an incredible cost in medicine,
and I re-used EVERYTHING I could, as LONG as I coud. Now,
despite the fact that they don't cost me much, I don't see any
reason to waste. Niw, I wil throw out a slightly bent pen, where before, it had
to be pretty kinked for me to throw it out.

After injection: do you put the protective hub back on the needle
+ leave the needle on the tip of the pen, put the cap (that comes
with the pen itself) on the pen, and it all fits then?
M.

Yes, I do it that way.
I also had small dots of blood sometimes. Not very many times. I
usually have a small amount of brusing, but my skin only looks a
light yellow.

What kind of pen have you?
Mostly pens have caps which can not be put back into place (after injection) without removing the needle first.
Unless..one does _not_ put any protection back on the needle at all.
Maya

Novolog and Lantus Solostar. For my pens, the "hubs" and the caps can
be put back on after the injection. The needle stays on the pen
until I decide to remove it.

Here is a good pic of the needle going on the pen. The needle has a large plastic cover they show here, the Outer cap. The cover is
thrown away. There is a thin protective hub that I keep and use, the
Inner cap. The Pen cap is put back on, also.

Ah, I see that you use the NovoTwist needle.
Do you use it for both insulinpens? Does it fit the Sanofi-prefilled
as well? (i.e. I think that Lantus is made by Sanofi, as you write: Solostar).
Would about be the first time that NovoNordisk produced sth that can
be used on other insulinpens than their own.

I use BD-needles, do _not_ fit a prefilled pen. Right now I do not yet
use a prefilled, but it looks like I will have to.

Thats a pity now: cant open these last two links..

(the first one went fine, mystery..)
M.

Yes, it's for both pens.
I made tiny URLs for the links you could not open:

http://preview.tinyurl.com/8yklgz2
and
http://preview.tinyurl.com/73qnvhb

I guess those links didn't work because they are long URLs.

Yes I see them now, thank you!

I went to the diabetes nurse today, she had a prefilled Sanofi Lantus pen (I personally am looking for the InsumanRapid Solostar, but the sizes dont change, she said).
She demonstrated to me that the whole cap could _not_ be put back on the needle so that the pen-cap could be replaced. (thats what I initially was after, as I do that with my NovoPen Echo, which pen I can throw away as soon as my Actrapid cartridges are all used).

What _did_ work though: the little inner cap _could_ be replaced on the needle, then the pen-cap could put back into place without taking the needle off the pen-tip. (you do that, dont you?)

She commented that one has to be cautious about not pricking ones finger when putting the inner cap back on (one is mostly very much discouraged to do that), but anyway: it worked.
So its up to me now to if I want to take the risk of pricking my fingers even more than only for checking my bg's..;-)

M.

Yes, that is how I use my pens.

Good. I consider buying (magnifying) glasses to see if I put the little cap on the needle - or in my finger(s).
What I also can do is putting my glasses(for far-off seeing) on the tip of my nose so I can look over them..
