I did that a few months ago, but found that extra information is needed before those instructions are enough.
If you prefer to ask on a newsgroup, mozilla.support.thunderbird is the best choice, but it is only available on a very few newsgroups servers. Google Groups is one of them, but makes it a private group there.
If you prefer to ask on a website, try:
http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging
Mozilla has started going to new version numbers every few weeks now - they've already got version 10 of Thunderbird in beta testing, and perhaps version 11 also.
