ya, well, that's where some things look better to do than other things
LOL

And it turns out I continued dinking around on-line instead. But that's
because as I was packing up the drive, I realized that it wasn't 100%
unusable. It failed most of the time, but it actually had two complete
backups on it. So I had to hook it back up and do a full erase. Which
for this size of drive takes more than half a day.

It will take longer if it's faulty. A quicker method is to place it on a
concrete floor and jump on it severeal times. That's what we technicians
call a "low level format"

All my obsolete and defective HDs receive a coup de grace from a sledgehammer
that assures not only the electronics are unusable but the disk(s)
inside are broken as well. It isn't paranoia, but having known several
people who went dumpster diving regularly.
