I have been under some stress because... Next door neighbor left the
country. Not sure where he went but I was told Sweden. I thought he was
from Finland and husband thought he was from Iceland. Long story short but
his door was boarded up and I finally spoke to him about it as I saw him
putting bags (as in luggage) in a car that was not his.
He had a little bitty house that he had tried to turn into a huge house
but
then he ran out of money. But he went about it in a very strange fashion.
Apparently he was not even able to put flooring in! As for the exterior
of
the house the only part that was finished was the very front. Looked fine
from the front but horrid from the sides. The back yard looked to be that
of a hoarder. He did haul away at least two big rental trucks full of
what
appeared to be crap. Such as excess building materials. He dumped some
in
the front yard. But Angela and I looked and there is a lot less in the
back
yard now. Still some lumber, old flooring, hoses, pipes, etc.
He said he just couldn't take living in an unfinished house any more and
then when the rats came, it was the last straw. He was leaving the
country
and he had taken his front door. It was a leaded glass door with lead
panels around it which he also appeared to take. And in looking we see
that
he took one window from the back as well as two more doors. All boarded
up.
And he hasn't mowed his grass since July of 2010 so a perfect breeding
ground for rats!
I spoke to the neighbors on the other side of him. They knew about the
rats
but made it sound worse than he made it out to be to me. Yick! So I
haven't been sleeping well at night, fearing the rats will get in. He
told
the neighbors on the other side that he left pretty much everything in
there, including the food in the fridge. He left the garage door open and
told them and a bunch of others to take whatever they wanted.
I have checked into it and his taking the doors was illegal. Apparently
he
could take them provided he replaced them with other doors, even if they
were cheaper doors. But he did not and those boards do not look secure.
Also the neighbors said he left it so that the garage door could not be
secured in any way. So now I worry about squatters as well.
I did notify the health department. Sadly they said they could do nothing
about the rats aside from put up papers on the doors saying there were
rats
in the area and telling us what to do to protect ourselves from getting
them. They haven't done that yet. Not sure if they will because I said
we
were all aware of the problem. To compound things, there is a guy behind
us
(next street over) who feeds all manner of animals in his yard. I do not
know him but the other neighbors do. They have asked him to stop doing
this
but he won't. And the health department said they can't stop him. *sigh*
I do have Terminix on contract and they've been coming quarterly. But
given
that my bait stations are always empty now, I think this is not enough.
They will be coming on Tues. Not that I want to pay them any more. But
now
I fear I have to.
I did contact the zoning office as I was instructed to do by the health
department. Got a card in the mail from them but they said they might not
be able to come for two weeks.
So this morning, early, I heard all this banging and whamming. At first I
thought maybe it was Terminix. I had contacted them but had not heard
back
at that point. I have since. The opening to the crawl space is at the
outside of my bedroom and it is quite noisy when opened and shut.
I looked outside. Couldn't tell what was going on. Finally had to climb
into my bathtub and open that window to look out. There was a man in the
backyard at said house. Throwing lumber around. He gave me a very dirty
look. I tried to go back to bed but he was just making sooo much noise.
Then my husband came in and he was making noise too. I gave up on
sleeping.
Went to take out trash and recycling that should have been taken out last
night but it was too icy then. It has warmed up now and the cans have
thawed out. By then the man was in the front yard. Not sure what he was
doing but he was giving me VERY dirty looks and making me uncomfortable.
So I came back in the house and eventually ate breakfast but at about 1.5
hours earlier than I usually do. BG was 138. A little high, yeah but
very
good for me considering it has been running between 200 and 380 when I
awake. BG was 109 before bed. I did feel oddly sick to my stomach before
bed. Not exactly like gastroparesis but pains in my stomach and wasn't
really hungry. So I opted for soup which usually goes down well. Had
some
bean with bacon that is a store brand. My BG is usually quite good in the
morning after eating this soup. I'm just not always in the mood for soup.
So was it the soup that I ate? Getting up 1.5 hours earlier? I just
don't
know. Or maybe it was a fluke. But I'd sure like it to be like this
always!
So there is a stranger in the abandoned yard and you are nervous about
him and you do not call the police to have him checked out.
Glad you live there and not in my neighborhood. My neighbors would
have the police there as soon as they noticed him. Of course they
never would have allowed anyone to have their home in that condition
either.
Well seeing as how he mowed the lawn over there... What's to call the
police about!? And how would your neighbors have not allowed it? What
would they have done? Neighbors here are not in charge of other people's
homes and we're not in the city. I couldn't see that he was in violation of
anything. But apparently he was.
