: A tip to help avoid the common broken wrist or collar bone in a fall
: -- when you throw your arm out to break your fall never stretch it out
: completely straight. Hold it slightly bent and braced against the
: impact. When straight the full impact goes straight through wrist and
: collar bone. But with bent elbow you get to cushion the fall by
: collapsing the arm.
: You probably won't manage it the next time you fall. But if you keep
: intending to do it, and regretting that you didn't, it'll start
: happening on the slower falls. With practice it will generalise to the
: faster ones.

When I was in third grade(age 8) we had a gym teacher who taught us to run
fast into a wallusing , in effect, our elbows as cushionso we hit with our
hands up, but bent the elbows as we hit. She also told us to relax if you
are falling. This worked well for me when, at 15 or so, I came down a
long hill on my old coaster brake bike adn the brakes didn't hold. At the
bottom was a y, and I had to steer to try to go to the slighly uphill one,
missed, but hit a rock(instead of going over an embankment to the grass
adn gravel below. As I hit, I remembered Mrs. Robbins saying relax and I
collapsed into the dip on the girls bike. I had a wrecked bike, but only
a few scratches. I have never liked the idea of boys bikes since then.
