BMC Neurol. 2011 May 25;11:55.
Fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain--differences and similarities. A
comparison of 3057 patients with diabetic painful neuropathy and
fibromyalgia.

I have both. Can be hard to determine which is the cause of the
pain and/or problems I am having.

I too have both and they both tend to get worse over the years. This
seems to suggest that they might have a common cause and might
explain why the new jabs in my lower back were not curbed by a new
mattress :(

Was the new mattress harder or softer?

It feels harder but more comfortable. Made from a kind of foam developed by
the Nasa which adjust itself to your body. That's what the commercial said.

Sounds interesting. I have to live with an ancient back injury which
seizes up and hurts if I stay immobile for too long. So although I
feel more comfortable in softer beds, the key to keeping my back
mobile and pain free is hard beds which make me move about more while
I'm asleep. Same with chairs. My computer chair is a hard wooden one,
no padding. Uncomfortable enough to makes me fidget in the chair and
get up often. Otherwise my back starts seizing up.

As others have also mentioned, a matress is a very personal thing.

Having said that, I think that you might want to try a 'Nasa' (memory
foam) mattress which is *not* too 'good'/expensive.

I have used both a rather 'high-quality' (i.e. expensive) and a lower
quality (i.e. less expensive) memory-foam mattress, and prefer the
cheaper one. It is somewhat harder and you 'sink' less into it. Reading
your above comments, the same might apply to you, but of course YMMV and
most likely YMWV.
