Of course they can. But it doesn't happen in the "real world"

Sure, but again, most of us do not live in a laboratory.

The calories you eat and don't excrete, burn in exertion,
radiate into the air, whatever, certainly in most cases
correlate highly to weight gain (with rare exceptions).
On this, we apparently agree.

Where it seems we disagree is how much practical value
there is in this. Because the _types_ of foods can affect
all the other variables, and many (probably most) are
unwilling and/or unable to measure those other variables.
