The idea that Columbus "thought the world was round" when everyone
else
thought it was flat was invented by Washington Irving in 1828 for his
romantic story "A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher
Columbus"
Funny ... I was taught in grade school, in world history, that
during the
Dark Ages, when religion was highly restricted and corrupt, that it
was
believed the world was flat.
Yet the Bible, in the Old Testament, speaks of a round world ... about
4500
B.C., iirc.

ok, Chapter and verse please, i've read the Bible cover to cover at
least
twice over (and for the other's, i also have read "The Rig Veda" and
"The
Tanakh" and "The Analects of Confucius" and "On searching the
scriptures"
and "The Apocrypha and The New Testament" and "The Dhammapada" and "The
Qur'an" and "Songs of Hiawatha")
i don't remember a round world in any of those books, i only remember
the
'flat world theory' from school!

Isaiah 40:22
Actually, the passage speaks of the vastness of the heavens also . .
.and no
telescopes to be found.

very interesting
It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, ............
this bible was published in 1952 "Revised Standard Version"
i can't find my King James version

the KJV is an awful translation, pretty, but not a good translation.
Generally, the more recent, the better. for two reasons:
1) People now are more concerned about accurate translation, and more
scholarly
2) The ENGLISH language has subtle changes over fairly short periods of
time, and the exact meaning of the English used in translation of any word
can change
Ted,
Did you know that the Authorized King James Version was actually a
translation into the street language of the era? Yep, so the peasants could
understand and read the Bible.
Royalty spoke Latin, or French ... even in merry ol' England.
Every language drifts from it's original. The most obvious being the Tower
of Babel incident. But no language is totally free of drift or inclusions
from other languages.
As to translations, do you want "word for word" or "though for thought"?
The NKJV is more "word for word" and the NIV is more "though for thought"
and both agree on six literal days for Creation.
I use both, the NKJV in a chronological format and an older NIV as a cross
