I must admit it takes me a bit of juggling of dose/diet/activity to avoid

I doesn't change anything about the question: Why would anyone avoid
insulin?
Side effects.
AFAIK, Weight gain is the main long term one.
Hypos are the main instant one(direct inection into artery./vein).
Individual effect may vary.
Re weight gain: I feel some diabetics may be using insulin as an excuse
to enable them to eat more.
Re hypos: I feel any diabetic put on insulin should drastically increase
their number of bg measurements, at least until they get to know the
relationship between their insulin dose, what they eat and their physical
activity. Unless he or sho does that, they will be constantly either
getting hypos or complaining of high bg readings. Such a person should
also learn how to compensate for a low bg reading - not to overdo it with
eating thus going on the proverbial "roller coaster".
I gained weight and I'm eating LESS. Not more. I am having hypos
although not daily but when they do occur it is just prior to my eating my
bedtime snack.
getting a hypo at night, yet also not to get a high fbg. Often what works
one day does not work the next.
