Diabetes or Not?

Today I had a conversation about diabetes and control with a person who told
me that her HBA1C is 6.8, and her FBG is 120-130.
This person has apparently been taking 1000mg of metformin per day "for
years." The person's doctor says she doesn't have diabetes, she's
"pre-diabetic."
She says she prefers not to "obsess about it," so apparently she likes being
told she doesn't have diabetes yet.
BTW, while we were having this conversation, she was holding a plate
containing potato salad, a hot dog with a large roll, a serving of baked
beans, and a salad containing corn. She said that this represented
"moderation" in carb intake. I suggested that either the roll OR the potato
salad OR the beans OR the corn, but not all four, might be moderation. I
later saw her drinking a large glass of lemonade, sweetened with sugar, of
course.
IMHO, she should get a new doctor. But hey, it's her body and her life. I
find it disturbing, though. This is an intelligent person, but as long as
the doctor continues to enable denial, she's going to be comfortable going
on in the same way.
