There are a couple of nice ladies who go to the cafe where I have my morning
coffee/crosswords. We exchange hellos. I spoke (whinged?) about my diabetes.
One of the ladies said her husband, a truck driver, has diabetes... "He does
what he wants," she said. "I hope he's not in denial" I responded, perhaps
unwisely. "No, he's not in denial," the lady answered most emphatically, "he
just does what he wants..." It left me puzzled about what 'does as he wants'
meant, but I did not pursue the matter. I know when to quit.
Is it possible the lady was in denial about her husband being in denial?
Henry.

My cousin does not have diabetes, but she is a prime candidate. She does not deny that she could become diabetic, but she always says, "Everyone has to die of something someday." So, she's not willing to take any preventative measures even though she actually knows about diabetes and does not deny that she's a candidate. This could be close to the truck driver's attitude, except that he already *has* diabetes.
