Are you replying to me? Because I posted the entire article, and my understanding after reading it was that the fasting WAS determined to be the key factor.
Wes is the one who picked out the paragraph you are quoting.

But in the orginally study it was only the Mormons that fasted once a
month that got the extra benefits.
They accounted for the above mentioned confounders.
