For those of you who have neuropathy, have you ever had numbness
there? I have not.

I ask because Angela is having numbness there and up into her ankle.
The hospital diagnosed a sprain but I don't believe that because
there is no pain. That was a week ago. I took her to the walk in
clinic today and they said it could be diabetes. The Dr. asked about
a history of MS in the family. None that I know of.

She will be tested for diabetes on Sat. Why then? The test has to be
done fasting and I don't want her missing any more school. The Dr.
didn't say exactly what kind of test they will be doing and I didn't
ask. But he will be doing some more labs at that time.

Prior to that she has had a strained muscle in the back, foot pains
that were diagnosed as plantar fasciitis and an assortment of
illnesses. Respiratory and stomach things.

I am hoping it is not diabetes, but with it running on both sides of
the family I know it is only a matter of time.

This numbness is just stumping me though. It first occurred at the
dance convention. And it got worse the following day. They were
dancing for close to 7 hours straight both Sat. and Sun. on a floor
that is designed more for ballroom than what they were doing. Most
of the time she was only in socks. Tap and athletic shoes for a few
hours. And ballet shoes for about an hour.

Another girl told me that her feet go numb because of the flooring
but it sounded like she meant the bottoms of her feet. And hers get
better.

Thanks!

I'm no doctor, but keep in mind that numbness could be nerve problems
as a result of a minor injury and will eventually go away. A friend of
mine has sciatica and that affects her feet as well. As diabetics, we
tend to always think that everything is diabetes related when it may,
in fact, be something else. Since she was in a dance convention it is
quite possible that she somehow had a minor injury to a nerve that
caused the problem. You won't know for sure until she gets thoroughly
checked over (and sometimes even then they still might not know.)
Hopefully it is minor and not diabetes related. You're a good mom for
making sure all the possibilties are looked at by a professional. Keep
us posted.

I had thought of diabetes because she had darkened skin which I thought
might be Acanthosis Negricans, a sign of insulin resistance. However her
darkened skin wasn't necessarily in the same spots as it would be with that.
And as it turns out, it scrubs away nicely with some effort. Up until now
she refused to scrub hard enough to make a difference. And she loves to
wear black shirts which seem to have dye that leeches onto the skin.

The Dr. said to me that numbness wasn't usually a first symptom of diabetes.
But when I told him it was with me, he hopped right on it.

If she does have it, it would most likely be type 2 and not type 1. She
does not seem to have any symptoms of that.

She was complaining today of itchy skin and it does appear to be dry. And
she was complaining of a headache and stomach pains, which I googled and saw
that they are a sign of diabetes in children, but not necessarily adults.

However... I woke up this morning with what I thought was a migraine and
it's not gone. For me they usually last a good three days. Sometimes more.
I promptly threw up the two bites of cottage cheese I ate as well as my
morning pills. Grrr...

I feel fine now but hungry. I was fearful to eat dinner. I had planned to
make lasagna and the spinach wasn't going to keep much longer. So I made it
anyway. Both of us ate very little of it and mainly just the rice pasta.
She wasn't hungry either and that is just not like her. She is one of those
kids who is hungry all the time!

So I think we have some sort of less than 24 bug or something. I hope she
will wake up and feel better because she simply can not miss any more
school!
