A lie is always intentional.

Uh

Sorry Gyse, it was bad sentence construction on my part.
What I intended to convey was that -

*If* he *truthfully* stated what he *believed* to be true,
then there was *no lie*.

The reason being that for someone to tell a *lie* they must know, or at
least suspect, that the information they represent as true is unreliable.

Therefore telling a lie *must* be intentional.

Ok

Certainly if he knew that what he said was false then he was lying.

As long as *you* are sure of his *intent*, then fair enough.

*You* in this case being *one* even though it was also applicable to Julie.

However sure you are, you may be wrong .. which would not make you a
liar.

Uh

ie *If* Julie was sure of the truth of what she was saying,
*then* she also would not have been lying
and so could not be called a liar for what she said.

Ok

Lying is wrong as in evil.

As distinct from wrong as in merely erroneous.

Being mistaken occasionally is just part of being human.
I think there is a vital difference.

Calling someone a liar can damage their reputation.
Damaging someone's reputation unfairly is an unwarranted assault.
Intentionally damaging their reputation unfairly is a malicious assault.
