Not long after Verizon sold everything to Frontier,
I opened a DSL account with Frontier.

A _minimum_ of once per day, often more, the modem
suddenly stops passing packets on the DSL line.

Trying to ping any name or address outside hangs till
Ctrl-C, not even a timeout message or a "no route to host"

The modem's admin pages and its LEDs both say the DSL carrier is fine.

The router part continues to work, i.e., all our devices, wired or not,
Windows, Nintendo, Mac, iPhone continue to talk to each other.

Whatever "diagnostics" Frontier runs from their end says there's nothing
wrong. The modem self-test says it's OK.

Rebooting the modem always fixes it for a while (anywhere from ten
minutes to ten hours).

Finally persuaded one of the tech support geniuses to STOP ASKING ME TO
REBOOT MY MAC!!! and so they sent me another modem. Which does the same
thing.

What could they possibly be doing on the line that can be fixed by
rebooting the modem?

I hope they get it figured out so they can keep paying that 13% dividend yield!
