I don't know why they even do HgA1c. It does not really tell you if
you're diabetic or the extent of any metabolism problem. They should
routinely do the OGTT instead.

I disagree.

The OGTT can be torturous and post prandial glucose testing far easier
and more indicative of what's happening metabolically in real world
conditions.

Torturous? Hardly. A regular type PP testing wouldn't show much except a
random number at a certain point in time. In the real world there are many
variations of diabetes/metabolic disorders. A one off random bg testing is
not going to prove a thing. If a random bg reading is inclonclusive for what
the doctor thinks might be happening or showing a high number (that is
*possibly* indicative of diabetes - remember the late Charles Evans' wife
being dx'ed diabetic when in fact she had another disorder, thyroid problem
IIRC), it still needs something more to help with a diagnosis. IMO the OGTT
has a lot of value and a definite place as a diagnostic tool.

The implication of the above statement (as I read it) HgA1c testing is
being confused as a diagnostic test. It isn't, HgA1c test is a
*monitoring* test for those already diagnosed with diabetes. Gives
appx 3mth average of blood sugar levels. Also, it is not a substitute
for daily monitoring.
