Haven't posted in a while. So the Byetta, Metformin and Glimeperide
combo does not seem to be working very well. It is very hard to keep
my BG below 180. VERY hard. As an experiment, I tested 111 at
4:30pm. Got busy working and at 6:30 munched exactly 2 tortilla chips.
At 7:30 the BG was 156 and holding steady. So I am seeing the endo
on Monday and I will ask about insulin. What I am most interested in
knowing is approximately how much does a T2 use. I know it depends on
diet. But since I have no insurance I need to get an idea of the
price. I suspect I will be on the Novo Nordisk pen since my endo has
all kinds of literature lying around her office. How long might one
of those cartridges last and roughly how much do they cost each? I
know Wal-Mart and Costco have some low prices supposedly. It would
really be sweet if it costs less than the Byetta at 300.00 per month.
Plus, I am not happy with the latest Byetta warnings at all. Insulin
is at least something your body normally makes anyway. Also, once on
the insulin, do I cease the other meds like the Metformin?
Do you intend to be proactive? I'm not a doc - and I'm not on insulin.
But the moment I go on insulin, I'll read every section of
Dr.Bernstein's 'Diabetes Solution' before I do anything else. As I
understand it, the typical procedure is to prescribe a given amount of
insulin and then expect the patient to manage his diet to live with
that amount. Dr. Bernstein uses a proactive procedure - of knowing what
every carb you eat will do to your system and, coordinating that with
activity levels, adjusts the insulin to cover what you're doing. Much
more efficient and much more controllable - also more work.
If insulin resistance were being provoked by insulin itself, would not
taking more insulin actually produce more insulin resistance? Just a
question for which I do not know the answer.

You'd have to ask the experts.
