that is my whole point

you want to have an A1c of 5.5 (?)
why don't you want an A1c of 4.5 ?

5.5 is achievable through diet and exercise for me. 4.5 is unlikely to
be achievable by a non-diabetic woman my age under any circumstances.
I wouldn't mind scoring a straight 5 - but not by chucking medication
at the problem; it's an overkill at those levels, and just complicates
my body's job of coping with broken/laggy feedback systems. OTOH, if I
were heading for 6 - I'd be looking round to see what the current tech
is.

so
you decided that 5.0 - 5.5 is about your personal optimal value (?) By which you say we agree on the existance of an optimal value (?) and that to go for the lowest possible value, by any means, might be a bit inproductive (?)

My lowest HbA1c was 5.0
then I stopped all medince also the Metformine
I adhered to my exercise scheme a bit better
I lowered my carb's a bit further
my latest HbA1c = 5.5

I don't want the Metformine (and the muscle spasms) back
I don't want more exercise because there are more important things in my life
I don't want a lower carb diet because I even have to skip my birthday cake once a year

So
I decided that 5.5 is my optimal value

my two cents :
there are TWO effects, not just one :

1) the benefits (?) of a HbA1c of about 3, even for "healthy" people
2) the hazards you put yourself through to reach such a ambitious goal
