Michael, there's no difference between simple and complex carbs in terms of metabolism. Some simple ones are much lower glycemic than many complex ones.
Red wine with meals has glucose lowering and antioxidant properties that other alchohols don't have, though moderate drinking can he helpful in general.
A 4 oz. serving of red wine has very little carbohydrate.

I may try some wine. It sure would taste better than the rum. I might not give me such a killer headache either. The rum also gave me acid reflux that night.
This morning I took nothing the night before and my FBG was right back up another 15 points.
I think Ray's idea about alcohol at bedtime may be a very sound one.
