Hi all,
I have mentioned before that I contemplated gastric bypass, since it is
reputed to stop type 2 diabetes in its tracks, which sounds pretty
tempting to most diabetics. I ultimately decided against it since I am
over 65 yrs old, and the doc I consulted didn't want to go beyond that.
A relative had it done on 11/23. She went into atrial fibrillation
(irregular, racing heartbeat) and has continued in and out of it, she
has been going in and out of ICU ever since. She is still in the
hospital, 12 days later.
Because of the danger of stroke from the atrial fib, they were giving
her Coumadin, (anti coagulant). This caused GI tract bleeding. She
lost a lot of blood. Thus far she has received 4 units of blood, and
the doc prescribed two more units, but they can't give it to her because
she now has a fever.
The surgery it seems, was a success, and no problems in that area, but
the other stuff is pretty bad. So unless one is in excellent health
beforehand, this surgery can be a serious risk.
Just offering this so anyone who is contemplating it, will know that
there are risks.
I don't know what you want me to say - there are risks to every surgery.
It is up to the patient and the patient's doctor to assess whether the
benefits outweigh the risks.
