Re: Question for the group

Thanks for the link and other info Tiger Lily. Good reading and I plan on trying the cocktail prior to starting on Lyrica.

I saw a back doctor about 1 1/2 years ago and he was doubtful that anything could be done about the back issue. There is a newer Neruosurgeon at the hospital my spouse works at that has a very good rep and I plan on setting up an appointment with him. A second opinion won't hurt and to be quiet honest I'm getting real tired of being in pain 24 hours a day.

pps

the nerve damage from L5 won't be fixed with the ALA,the stenosis is what is pressing on the nerve and that has to be fixed to stop that nerve damage

take care!

RB, this is just my personal opinion as I am not a doctor. This is a
case of weighing the pros and cons, problems with circulation and legs,
God forbid amputations vs. taking flyng lessons, which may be without
your appendages. I think common sense should prevail here

In reply to all who have answered I offer my thanks.

To Tiger Lily:

I tried following your link but it seemed like a dead end. I would really like to read that info so perhaps if you would be willing to check the link or offer a little more guidance. Most likely my error on following your directions.

For Rod S and terryc :

I appreciate your comments. I assure you that I think I am doing fairly well with control and not holding back. My last blood work (done quarterly) was excellent in every area except Glucose was 113 (range 65-99) and HbA1c was 6.1 (range <6.0).

Other significant numbers:

Total Cholesterol 144 (range 125-200)
HDL 51 (range (> or = 40)
Triglycerides 128 (range <150)
LDL-Cholesterol 67 (range (<130)
Chol/HDLC Ration 2.8 (range < or = 5.0)

I do take a statin, metformin and Hyzaar for blood pressure. I also take a daily supplement of krill oil (Omega 3) and have noticed a significant drop in BP since starting that over previously taking fish oil . May just be coincidence.

The one area I have done poorly in is weight control. After I stopped smoking some 10 years ago and before Type II I did gain some weight and now seem stuck at around 190/195 lbs (5' 9"). I try to limit my carb intake but like a lot of people overdo on occasion. Seems no matter how I modify my diet the weight stays put, neither going up or down. I need to step up the exercise but walking is fairly painful after a short distance due to the back issue.

For Loretta:

I would never risk my health just to do something I desired like the getting pilots lessons. My pain levels are irritating but not so much that I limit my activities to much. My concern was that Lyrica might be a disqualifier all by itself and if so I would look for other means to combat neuropathy. Seems I have seen discussions of some folks taking EPO and having positive results. I may give it a go just to see what happens. To be quiet honest taking Lyrica scares me a bit.

I'm not sure if I truly have neuropathy or problems associated with the L5 stenosis issue or a combination of both. I plan to schedule an appointment with a neurologist to investigate those issues. I'm waiting for a copy of the Nerve Conduction study to be mailed to me so I will have it for the neurologist. Should have it in a couple of days.

So again I offer my thanks to all of you.

a friend in Norway had to have the spinal column 'cleaned out' to stop the entrapment of the nerve in L4 and L5

surgery was hard on him, caused more pain, but after a number of months, the back pain relieved itself for him

chin up! and get that 2nd opinion
here's to pain free days for you, for a change
