If you go into msconfig.exe, and look at the startup section, you
will probably find a file that loads for the touch pad. For
example, mine is the second one loaded from the Synaptics directory.
If you uncheck that and reboot, it should stop loading.

I'll check it; I get a bit nervous about fiddling about with msconfig.
I can just see me doing that, succeeding, then losing my external
mouse and having no way of re-activating the touch-pad :-)

But I'll look into it.

The external mouse loads by recognition at boot up. Anything undone in
startup can be re established. The entry remains in the list, just without
a tick next to it.

Yep, even I am fearless with run msconfig. :-) I have very little that
starts automatically.

One is often amazed at the things that a loading on startup and constantly running in the back
ground that suck up resources and slow everything down. msconfig is something I couldn't do without.
