This morning we had a frost. Nothing on the ground but the bird bath
outside my bedroom window was frozen over and a sparrow tried in vain
to get a drink.  The woman who helps me in and out of the bath in the
morning went out and eventually broke the ice with a stone. A stick
didn't do it. After that it was a delightful sunny day.  Let's hope it
is fine for tomorrow's Farmers' market.

Wow, do you get frosts often? I don't know where I got it from, but I
thought the Hawkes Bay climate was mild. I'm glad your helper extended
her bath duties to the sparrow : )  Here, it was blazing hot last week
- really Flaming June, as our saying goes - but this week will be
comparatively cold and wet. My fault, I ordered some new garden
furniture last week, it arrives on Monday... then hopefully I can take
my office work out into the garden when summer kicks back in. I
started it from bare soil in February, and I'm enjoying it hugely -
I'm having a lot of luck with petunias. Yesterday I had 53 blossoms :D
Slugs have found my runner beans, and pigeons have ripped my purple
sprouting broccoli to shreds, but my blueberries, carrots and leeks
are doing well! It's also my local monthly Farmers Market tomorrow,
and for a wonder I'm not being a taxi for my teens during it. I need
some new olive oil, and one of the producers brings in the most
lovely, peppery stuff from her summer property in Spain.

Hope your life is running a bit smoother today, Quentin. Well wishes
coming your way...

Nicky.

I have a tip for slug problems!!! If you place large gravelchips,
jagged stones or dried, crumbled egg shell around crops and plants,
slugs cant crawl over them.
Far nicer way of keeping them at bay than slug killer!

A saucer of beer works very well too. They drown very happy. Of course you
have to have surplus beer.
