Many if not most of you have seen my sporadic posts from time to time, and this news groups has been and continues to be an inspiration to my healthy path of diabetic living. I post seldom but read almost daily.
An interesting thing just happened at my house. My mother in law (who we asked to live with us after my father in law died about a year ago) is a very healthy 77 year old. Very spry, very active (and the best housekeeper one could ever hope for!!! ;<)
Not feeling well the last couple of weeks and having complained about feeling tired for several months, my wife and I feeling that perhaps it's just the fact that she's 77 for crying out loud, and not getting nearly the level of exercise she used to get when she maintained a home - but finally made a Dr appointment this week, and the Doc suggested she might be having sugar high /lows and ordered some tests.
So on a fluke after we returned from dinner Sunday (consisting of steak, baked potato and salad and rolls for her) I tested her about an hour later and she was at 190. AHA! The problem.
And then, since I was there with my wife present, I told my wife, GIVE ME YOUR FINGER TOO! Reluctantly she submitted to the prick and can you believe... 186!!!! Another great AHA moment.
And just to prove it wasn't the fault of the meter, I tested my own and it was 120. (I had the same meal, only sweet potato instead of Idaho, and I ate no bread).
So it now seems I'll be living in a home where all three adults are going to be at some stage of diabetes and I suppose we'll all be taking the same meds and eating the same food!!! Actually we eat the same foods already, but they partake of breads and sugars and white veggies that I never touch.
I wouldn't say this is "strange"... but it certainly goes to show how "common" diabetes would is, and even more so if everyone would GET TESTED!!!!

Hi Wes,
I'm sorry your wife and MIL have to deal with the sugar issues. However, on the upside, those one hour readings are not horrendous, and it appears that you caught their condition early. I speak from experience. That is what my 1 hour BGs were running after a similar meal when I came to ASD in 2005, and I still take no medications. It's all managed primarily through diet. They are lucky to have you as both an awesome example, and a good educator.
Best regards,
Michelle C.
I suspect they'll both land in the "pre-diabetic" camp... and then we'll all collectively "stick to it"....
Wes
