Research has shown that the primary infection route for colds and flu
is picking up the germs on your fingers, and then transferring to the

Yep. I am cautious when breathing in enclosed areas like
aeroplanes and doctor's waiting rooms, but I find it is
still a necessary inconvenience:-)
Thankfully, they haven't told us to stop doing that yet. ;-)
However, I am a little obsessive over what my hands touch
and how clean they need to be before nearing my mouth or
nose.
I admit I thought that was just something Moms told their kids to do
-- 'cause their Moms told them to do it. I learned when I was on the
road, though, that it does work. As long as I was faithful about
washing my hands, I didn't get sick. No small feat, considering we
were probably exposed to anything and everything.
My son is now in denial, also, and while he doesn't get sick often, he
catches more bugs than I do -- and I don't catch them from him.
I'm not a clean freak by any stretch of the imagination. I don't use
bleach wipes and I don't disinfect every possible surface -- I'm too
lazy for that. Frankly, I think kids would be better off these days
if they ate more dirt and weren't disinfected on a regular basis. But
they should wash their hands after playing with that mud pie -- or any
of the other nasty things that seem to be so attractive to kids. ;-)
I think that is an important point. Back when I was a
growing toddler and child my body was adjusting all the
time. Among other things it was creating reactions in my
system to the various contagions I came in contact with,
developing antibodies and protections.
Later, I probably came in contact with almost every
communicable disease resident in Australia as a cab driver,
accepting cash in ungloved hands and breathing in what my
passengers breathed out. And I built up more antibodies
which may be why I can now travel the world without catching
things - touch wood:-)
At the other end of my life, with hypogammaglobulinemia, my
compromised immune system is not going to create many more
protectants; "what does not kill me makes me stronger" no
longer applies because far more things will kill me before
those antibodies get working.
So I discreetly do my Adrian Monk impersonation as I wander.
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.
