Personally, I would love it if I didn't feel owning a gun for protection was necessary.

I think that says a lot about this conversation. In reading
through it, the background problem is the security, or lack
of it, around home, district and workplace.

I have also had insecure moments in my life, but in my
society there is a very high probability that in the rare
event that I need to defend myself or my family the attacker
will not be armed. Not with a gun, and probably not with a
knife, although that is a little more possible these days.

I'm not writing as some-one who has led a sheltered life; I
drove cabs on the night-shift in a city of 4 million for
nearly 17 years. The difference between Melbourne and an
equivalent US city was that I can remember nearly every
driver killed in that 17 years and the circumstances of the
killing. There were about ten.

What is this year's cab-driver toll for a US city of 4
million+? Skim through here for a week's worth:

Of course we have crime, and murders, and even crazed
loonies who use guns to kill en masse, but the relative
numbers pale into insignificance compared to the societies
on this planet where universal gun owner-ship is considered
either normal or a right.

Societies like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Rwanda, Sudan...and
the USA.

Our biggest problem here is excessive adolescent and youth
drunkenness; think Spring Break at CanCun far too often and
too long. Thank goodness the worst weapon they have is fists
and bottles, I shudder to think what it would be like if
they had access to guns.

Hey Alan,

I would agree, that our societies are different, hence the different gun laws and reactions to them. You can count yourself fortunate that your threats do not come in the form of a gun.

However, guns per se are only part of the story. There is one thing missing in this conversation--the uniquely woman's perspective. I don't care what nation a person lives in, if she's a woman, it really doesn't matter whether the guy is armed or not or, what with. If he wants to do her harm, then he can overpower her. I find my .38 to be a great equalizer.

I don't imagine very many men ever view another unarmed man as near the threat that a woman does. Think about it.

Best regards,
Michelle C.
