I've been putting my life at risk. Since my oncologist puts my life
expectancy as pretty appalling I'm left wondering if I've done
something wrong. You can see my situation. As you'll be aware I've
been delighted to have someone of your caliber take an interest in my
situation and point out things I could do to help my chances.
Quentin, with respect - what are the adverse consequences of eating a
diet high in sat fat, vs your preferred diet, and the likely
timescales of those consequences?
Hi Nicky,
There seems to be an assumption here that I'd be better off having
more saturated fats in my diet. Please correct me if I'm
misinterpreting you. Has my diet helped or hindered my survival?
As most people recall, I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma five
years ago. This is completely unrelated to diet and lifestyle. When
the stem cell transplant failed I was given six months or so to live.
Thanks probably to the chemo I was given I contracted t-cell
non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. When this reappeared a second time I happened
to have pneumonia which nearly killed me. The usual chemo failed
thanks to the delay in treatment and now I'm left with etoposide as a
last resort.
Well I've survived something I should not have according to the
oncologists so whatever effect my diet has had seems to be positive.
That doesn't quite answer your question but it deals with an issue
that must be dealt with first.
If a sat fat diet has consequences
many years away, but with possible short-term benefits perhaps in
anti-inflammatory influences - perhaps you should swap, and review the
position further down the road?
That IS something I've been considering. However it is hard to see
exactly how I could improve my diet. Our main cooking oil is rice
bran oil which is 22% saturated fat. My wife prefers lamb or hogget
which is a fatty meat. So while I used venison, ostrich when it was
available locally and lean grass fed beef I rarely get it. We haven't
eaten as many almonds lately thanks to the price. I'm not getting the
work I'd hoped for. I did buy some walnuts which should be
anti-inflammatory. IMHO saturated fats are merely neutral as far as
the pro-inflammatory anti-inflammatory spectrum is concerned.
What I have been doing is increasing the RANGE of greens, things like
annual sow thistle, celery tops, chervil, French sorrel, garland
chrysanthemum etc.
Nicky.
Thank you Nicky, it is easy to discern that your suggestions are made
with love (dare I say) with my welfare at heart rather than any issue
you wish to promote at my expense. That means a lot to me. So double
thanks. Knowing people genuinely care means a lot. It really does.
Best wishes,
