Julie, the answer is you DON'T believe any of them.
Stop being fed up and helpless and start doing your own homework so you'll have a chance of knowing what you need and getting it from doctors.
Your health and that of your child are your job. If you haven't learned that from all the combined experiences here, at least, you're doomed to a lifetime of what you've described below.

Angela and I switched Drs. clinics back in Sept. We are now having second thoughts about this place. We switched partly because the old clinic could not seem to keep any Drs. there. There were always new ones and at times they were so short staffed that they couldn't see us at all and sent us out of town to one of their other clinics. We then got to hear complaints from the Dr. we *did* see about how they were sick of our clinic doing that..
I was given a lung X-Ray that my insurance refused to pay for. They said I didn't need it. And I don't think I did! I wasn't sick at the time but had gone in for the yearly physical my Dr. at the time said I needed. He asked about a variety of tests and since I'd never had a lung X-Ray, he ordered some.
And as for the tests... There were some that he said I needed yearly. Then the Dr. who replaced him told me I didn't need those yearly but every two years!
When one of us would get sick with something and it didn't go away, we would make a repeat visit only to see a different Dr. who would then tell us the first Dr. was wrong and diagnose us with something else!
And the biggest problem was their hours. They said they were going to have extended hours but they never did. That meant seeing the Dr. meant Angela was missing either school or dance class in most cases.
Our new clinic has more Drs. and more specialists (not necessarily in our city though) and a walk in clinic that is open 7 days a week with full capabilities such as X-Ray equipment. No more trips to other places for that. So while on the surface this seems better, we are still having some of the same problems.
One problem being that we never seem to get the same Dr. Yes, if we make an appointment with our assigned GP or Pediatrician, we will see that Dr. But that might take weeks to get in. So we usually go to the walk in clinic. But once again, we will remain sick with something, go back then be told by the next Dr. that the first Dr. was wrong and it is entirely something else that is wrong with us.
In Angela's cases, a problem came back so many times that I finally took her to the hospital where they couldn't do anything but tell us she needs to see a specialist. I will have to call there tomorrow and make an appointment. She is going off to camp soon and can't take meds with her unless approved prior and we have no time for the red tape that involves. Also this problem means she is spending much of her time in the bathroom so camp would not be a good place for her. *sigh*
So when you have a medical problem crop up and you go to the Dr., how do you know if you can believe what he/she said? For years I was told I had nothing wrong with me. Then one Dr. said I had diabetes. Then he turned around and told my husband he never said any such thing. This after my flipping out at just being told I had diabetes and not offered any follow-up care, meds, explanation or anything! Just sent on my merry way. Then the Dr. I saw after him also told me I didn't have diabetes. So I believed them!
Only when I crawled into a hospital, unable to stand up was I told beyond a shadow of a doubt that I did indeed have diabetes and to see an Endo. Which I did, but he turned out to be bad. :(
Sorry, I am kind of ranting on the medical profession. I know there are good Drs. out there. I used to have some. I just don't seem to have any now, nor do I know of anyone who is satisfied with their current Dr. in this area except for those who do not take my insurance.
Angela or I or sometimes both have been to the Dr. pretty much at least once a week since the start of school. I think I am well now. *knock wood* But she remains ill. I just feel fed up and helpless.
