As is well known I'm not on an ultra low carb diet so my knowledge
of ultra low carb diets has come from reading the limited amount of
research that has been done on it and perhaps more importantly from
watching what happens to folks on ASD who take this path.
Maybe it is one of those instances where those that report what is
happening to them aren't typical. Who knows. But what I've observed
is that they often go through a period where their lipid panel is out
of whack for a while but then improves better than they have had
before.
Actually, the high HDL/low TGL result is very typical of low carbers across the spectrum. The only time I lost some of the benefits was when I was severely adrenally suppressed and my body kept pumping out more LDL and less HDL to try and furnish me with enough material to make more hormones. Lipids are part of the endocrine feedback loop.
I've achieved the benefits on the whole controlled carb spectrum, from 40% carb to 5-10% carb. I saw dramatic improvements in every instance once I began eating plenty of saturate fat.
The horrors that are meant to befall them thanks to saturated fats
aren't happening. OK, so that is it for me. I've taken the soft
option as it were of sticking with cis monounsaturated fats laced with
omega-3.
But Quentin, I don't think it's a soft position. I think it may compromise an already highly stressed HPA axis.
Those who haven't and include saturated fats in the form of cheese in
ultra low carb diets seem to be doing OK. My guess is the hidden
villain they are avoiding is silent inflammatory disease from excess
omega-6 consumption.
Very important point, if they're eating grass fed meat and dairy, too, adding fish loaded with Omega 3s from wild sources, and avoiding the inflammatory cascade that feedlot products and starches cause.
