Some of you might find it interesting to watch the Adam's apple of the
industry representative. He would appear to be highly stressed as he
talks.
The problem isn't confined to the US. We had two shocking
experiences that seem likely to be related to the same problem ie
being sold old tires. The RAV has a spare tire covered with a
material cover. This got torn at the top and to our surprise the tire
collapsed in the area under the torn area. We put it down to exposure
to UV light. The tire and the cover were replaced.
However that wasn't the end of our woes. My wife took the RAV in for
a warrant of fitness. To her shock and horror she was told the tire on
right hand rear wheel also had a patch that had collapsed. The tire
had plenty of tread and appeared otherwise to be in good condition.
We were out of pocket for two tires. Lucky though that it was found
in a WOF inspection and it hadn't burst while driving. That could have
been fatal.
As far as I know NZ doesn't have any laws governing the age of tires
that may be sold. IMHO it is time we did.
